Genealogy Resources

The Gate House holds a small collection of Sykesville residents' personal papers, photographs, biographies, military records, cemetery records, and other documents.

Due to the expansion of our display spaces, we can no longer accommodate drop-in researchers. Please email or call us to arrange records access with a staff member.

Maps

The Gate House holds a variety of historical maps related to the Town's creation including topographic maps, fire maps, general geographic studies, road maps, plats, and some documents related to property transfer.

Click on this text to see our MAPS page for some of these resources available here or elsewhere online.

Ancestry.com

The Gate House staff are not professional genealogists, but we can help you get started with Ancestry.com research. Carroll County Public Libraries can provide you with free access to this site.

The links below will take you directly to each census record for the Town of Sykesville (or, prior to 1904, the Freedom District or section of Freedom District that included the current boundaries of Town). Note that in many cases what is considered "Sykesville" extends far outside this boundary and may be included on the broader Freedom District Census. In most cases, census of patients at Springfield Hospital Center are separately enumerated from Town and Freedom District residents.

Contact us if you have further questions regarding the boundaries of these areas, or where to find a specific area's records.
